The Dogma of the Shallow Well: Why Three Clicks Is a Myth, Not a Maxim
It’s one of the oldest, most persistent pieces of received wisdom in web design and information architecture: the ‘Three-Click Rule.’ The premise is simple, almost elegant. A user should be able to find any piece of information on your website within three clicks of the homepage. More than that, the theory goes, and you risk frustration, abandonment, and failure. It’s a rule that promises clarity, a tidy heuristic for keeping a site navigable. But like many tidy heuristics, it has hardened into a dogma that often obscures more than it illuminates, prioritising the illusion of simplicity over the genuine needs of both the user and the content itself.
The rule’s fundamental flaw lies in its assumption that a ‘click’ is a universal unit of cognitive effort. It treats every click as an equal burden, a step deeper into a maze where frustration mounts with each turn. Yet, anyone who has ever used a well-designed library or even a complex software application knows this isn't true. The effort of a click is not in the physical act, but in the decision that precedes it. A single click through a confusing, poorly labelled menu is far more taxing than three or four clicks through a logical, intuitive, and predictable pathway. The real metric should be the clarity of the path, not its arbitrary length.
This leads to the second, more pernicious problem: the tyranny of the shallow structure. In a zealous attempt to obey the three-click mandate, we are often forced to flatten our sites into unwieldy, sprawling monstrosities. We create homepage carousels that no one clicks, mega-menus that resemble airport departure boards, and category pages so broad they become meaningless. We sacrifice the very clarity we sought to create. Content that belongs in a deep, well-defined niche is forced to the surface, cluttering the landscape and making it harder, not easier, for users to find what they’re actually looking for. The well is made wide but impossibly shallow, forcing users to sift through miles of surface water instead of allowing them to drill down to the deep, specific pool they need.
The three-click rule also fundamentally misunderstands modern user behaviour. It is a relic of an era when ‘navigation’ was a primary activity. Today, users are just as likely to arrive directly on a deep, specific page via a search engine. For them, the journey isn’t from the homepage down; it’s a lateral exploration of related content. The ‘click depth’ from the homepage is irrelevant. What matters is the richness of the internal linking around that deep content—the suggestions, the related articles, the clear pathways to parent topics. The dogma of the shallow well ignores this reality, focusing all its energy on a journey that fewer and fewer users are actually taking.
So, what should we care about instead of the raw number of clicks? We should care about scent. Information scent. Does every link, every label, every heading provide a strong, clear indication of what lies on the other side? Does the structure of the site feel logical and consistent, so that a user can build a mental model of how it’s organised? A user will happily click five times if each step confirms they are on the right trail. They will abandon the site after one click if they feel lost. By fixating on an arbitrary numerical limit, we risk building sites that are technically ‘shallow’ but semantically confusing. Let’s abandon the myth of the three-click rule and focus instead on building paths that are meaningful, not just short.
