When you decommission an old page and redirect its path to a new one, you are joining the history and authority of the old to the promise of the new. Similarly, a canonical tag is less a command and more a precision alignment of plates. It’s the shipwright ensuring that two overlapping pieces of steel are perfectly flush before the weld is laid down. It tells the indexing engines, "Treat this seam as a single, unified surface, even though you perceive two." Without this careful alignment, you create a point of friction and weakness.
